In fact, letting everyone be weird and goofy and go off on their own tangents occasionally is crucial to creative process. At least, that's our excuse.

This week in the Supplemental section, we'll be posting some of these tangents for your enjoyment.

Our first entries focus on the untapped talents of our leading man, Joe Ballman.

"I'm Not Sorry" by Ehren Ebbage, from the album Ten Cent Souvenir (2008).

We were introduced to Ehren's work by Chris A. Bolton, who cast him in Season 1 of Wage Slaves and also used the fantastic title track off of Ten Cent Souvenir for the opening titles of his show. We soon realized we had some common friends in The Dimes. In fact, we shot one of absolute favorite performance videos of Ehren at a Dimes show last summer. It was one of those great unplanned moments where everything just works out perfectly.

"A Lonely Boy Makes a Handsome Steed" by Reclinerland, from the first self-titled album (1998).

"Don't You Know There Are Lonely People In The World" by Reclinerland, self-released as a free download (2/14/09).

"It Started At The Arcade" by Parks & Recreation, from the upcoming album How To Save The World (2029).

Michael Johnson, the creative force behind Reclinerland and the front man for Parks & Recreation is one of oldest and dearest collaborators. He's acted for us, written with us, and permitted us to use the bulk of his musical catalogue over the years. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Michael's music is pretty much the official Grammar School Pictures soundtrack. All of us at Grammar School Pictures are anxiously awaiting Reclinerland (2011) as well as the now almost mythical Parks & Recreation follow-up How To Save The World.

But, while we wait we can always take comfort in the classics. Please enjoy this first video collaboration with Michael, originally filmed for the 2004 48-Hour Film Project in Portland.

The Opening Titles

The most prominent musical presence in Episode 1 is obviously The Dimes. The introduction of their song “Up For Air” is the musical accompaniment for our opening credit sequence. Grammar School Pictures has a longstanding collaboration with The Dimes, having created on-line and promotional video content for the band since 2006, such as:

And

The Dimes’ most recent album, The King Can Drink the Harbour Dry, was release on December 1, 2010 on Timber Carnival Records.

It’s no exaggeration to say The Dimes’ new record is a musical Cliffs Notes for an early American History class. A sonic adventure with influences ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to The Beatles’ White Album, it’s the distinct lyrical musings that set it apart from other folk-pop albums this year. Singer-songwriter Johnny Clay delivers a dramatic history lesson with a baroque assortment of instruments, sixties pop harmonies, and delightfully simple arrangements as though he’s channeling the spirits of people, places and events from early day Boston, Massachusetts. (via Pet Marmoset)

Personally, we’re quite fond of track 2 – “The Liberator.”

What’s Jonathan Listening To?

“I AM” by L PRO, from the upcoming album Vertigo.

Grammar School Pictures recently completed production on a music video for this track and we felt it would bring some great energy to the scene. Plus, L PRO is one of the coolest people we know. We're big fans.

From LPromusic.com: A collection of hard hitting drums, solid lyrical skills and thought provoking concepts for true Hip Hop fans. With this record… L PRO remains committed to bringing a new sound to the pacific northwest and the world. With solid collaborations with Angel, Asa, Price Tag and others, Vertigo is promising to bring what many expect from L PRO.
